Dubai - which is kinda like the Alice in Wonderland of skyscraper architecture - is adding a new building to it's expanding portfolio. Four towers, each with 80 floors that can rotate 360 degrees. One apartment will be on each floor - and before you ask, they will be priced from $3.7M to $36M.
It takes about 3 hours for the floor to make a full rotation and once the building is "active" it will never look the same twice. Architect David Fisher shares:
"I call these buildings designed by time, shaped by life," said the Florence-based architect, who has never built a sky-scraper before. While I've already shared that I'm not the biggest fan of Dubai - today - I have to admit this is pretty darn cool. It's expected to be completed in 2010 - like everything in that darn city.
"These buildings will open our vision all around, to a new life."
I hold my advice to you on Dubai. Unless someone else is paying for your trip (hello sugar daddy or business boondoggle - take your pick!) I'm not sure you should go out of your way to make a trip there at this time. Wait until the transportation is better (oh, the traffic...the traffic...) and until some of these sweet goodies are actually completed. It's blazing hot (which I know is unlikely to change) and the beaches are only so-so. Americans have far better cheaper and closer options if beach is what you seek. But Dubai is quite the experience.
If you go in the near term, let me give you three tips. One, please choose your hotel wisely. Everything is so spread out - and read my comment about traffic above - I'd really make sure where you stay fits your needs. If you can't afford the 7-star Burj Al Arab (I can't!), the new Westin looks really nice. Two, you gotta go check out Ski Dubai at that big ass mall. It was so much freaking fun...words can't explain the joy of being able to ski when it's 110 degrees outside. Three, go on a desert safari. Total fun-ness as well and it gets you out of the city. And, a fourth free tip for you as I'm feeling generous today. If you want to drink - and I always do - hit the hotels. Only they can serve it - and every night club is conveniently located in a hotel for just that very reason.
Finally, Dubai keeps saying all will be done by 2010. But, I gotta tell you, with so much going on at the same time, I can't help but think that may be a bit optimistic. I'm putting my money on 2012.
Just sayin'
