Spiritual Travel: Trekking to see the Dalai Lama

Esteemed business rag The Wall Street Journal ran a front page story about the trek of many westerners to Dharmasala, India. Dharmasala is the home of Tibet's exiled spiritual leader the Dalai Lama. Many head there every year to seek out his wisdom and guidance.

And, they say that the Dalai Lama and his fellow Buddhist monks are, perhaps surprisingly, quite accessible and most willing to advise travelers on topics ranging from the big spiritual questions to simple career advice. When in town, the Dalai Lama leads public prayer sessions in the main temple and likes visiting with travelers.

That accessibility, combined with growing Western sympathy for the Tibetan struggle and Dharmsala's cheap digs, has sparked an uptick in visitors to this town of 20,000. The number of foreigners registered at the local visa office -- not always an accurate gauge for actual residents -- rose to 342 in 2007, up 30% from 2004. The number of Americans climbed to 54 from 30.
Okay, so maybe not that much of a rise in tourism. However, I do suspect they'll see a bit more after being touted on the front page of the Wall Street Journal (circulation 2+ million) - they even share how much easier it is to get there with newer roads that access regional airports (fly Delhi to Gaggla and your about 10-15 miles away).

Before you head there, be aware the the Dalai Lama's schedule is more packed than ever, so your odds of actually seeing him in Dharmasala may be quite slim.

Finally, if you are seriously interested in visiting Dharmasala (and it's on my big list), consider a volunteer trip or project. A great way to visit - and to give.
